Almost Hidden Treasure

Can you see her? I almost did not.

Every morning my dogs and I walk the fields and woods behind my house for about an hour. When we got back this morning I spied this female garden spider (Argiope aurantia) as she was just finishing up her zig-zag pattern in the center of her web. I wish she had set up shop in my tomato beds about 20 feet away. These spiders are great additions to gardens because they eat the bugs that like to chew on plants.

  1. That's an amazing shot...does that zig-zag pattern of her web show up as clearly in real life?

  2. Oh yes. That pic is not edited, only cropped and resized. From several feet away all I can see is the seemingly floating pattern with a huge spider on it.
The first time I ever saw one of these years ago I was afraid of it. I learned that they are harmless if left alone and are an asset to gardeners.

Thank you for taking time to reply. I really appreciate it.
