It Is A Small Beautiful World

The last 2 weeks have been such an emotional rollercoaster ride for me and my husband. The great dane we had raised since he was 2½ weeks old was hospitalized and very ill. Until his first blood tests came back it was thought perhaps it was his age. General life expectancy for a great dane is 7 years. He turned 8 last november 18th. Then the lab results came in and he was going into kidney and liver failure.

I was an emotional mess. George was all I could think about. I neglected this blog and my work. I spent my days at the clinic with George as tried to get him to eat and walk. I mentioned it on Twitter, Plurk and Creative Living. I was not expecting what happened next. So many people from all over Earth in many different countries offering well wishes and emotional support. It was so amazing that people who did not really know me reached out to me and let me cyber cry on their shoulders about a dog they didn't know.

George got to come home Monday and is continuing to recover. The latest lab results show that he is on his way to a full recovery. I am so grateful to have such a wonderful veterinarian who worked tirelessly at helping my baby.
I do not even know where to begin thanking all of those wonderful people out there scattered by miles yet brought together by the world wide web who helped me get through this. Their words meant more to me than I could ever express.
It really is a small and beautiful world.

  1. I am so sorry to hear that you were going through this, but glad you rec'd support & well wishes from cyber-friends that helped you through. Let me add mine as well-- may George continue to make a rapid & full recovery! What a sweet looking dog, he looks like a gentle giant.

I feel for you and I know that emotional roller coaster experience, having gone through it myself so many times with a very special health needs kitty. Our pets really do claim a special place in the heart.

  2. Thank you! I hope that your kitty is doing good. (((hugs)))

  3. I am so happy to hear that George is recovering!! That is such wonderful news!

  4. Gosh, I had no idea you wer going thru this, but I'm thrilled to hear that George is home and recovering! I lived with a kidney dog for many years and the supplements that have now are AMAZING!
Continued healing for your big baby <3

  5. It's such wonderful news that George is doing so much better!
I was really afraid that he wasn't going to recover because he was SO sick.
Your vet sounds absolutely wonderful, not only giving him great care but also recognizing how important it is to allow owners to spend time with their ill pets in order to help the healing process.

  6. Thank you all so much!

Ann, he is wonderful and has been our veterinarian ever since we moved here 19 years ago. He is planning on retiring within the next year or two. Honestly I am terrified I will never find another really good doctor after he does.

  7. you have NO idea how happy i am to hear this! i am THRILLED that george is getting better, and i am even MORE thrilled that you are doing better... i was so worried, as i know how awful going through something like that can be...

glad to know it's all working out! we love you and george!

  8. I am so glad to hear George is doing better and that you are doing better. I know how upset you have been. I have been thinking of you both!! Give George an extra rub behind the ear for me <3

    Love, Star

  10. I'm so glad George is doing better...I was following his progress on Plurk the whole time.

It's sad that stories like this can't be aired on the 6:00 news because the world just might be a more beautiful place.
