Just a little note to explain why I have been absent here. I got sick and then had a bad reaction to antibiotics prescribed to me. I am okay, or at least I will be. In the meantime I am staying out of my studio. Hopefully I will get back to it next week. I really miss sculpting.

Tiny lighthouse and a Holiday closing date reminder

This tiny little lighthouse is one of the recent things I made. I can not show anything else that was shipped with it until after Christmas.

blue lighthouse

Speaking of Holidays, I would like to remind everyone that I always close about the same time every year. This year I will be closed from December 10, 2012 until January 4, 2013. I do this so that I can spend time making gifts and spending time with my family. I will be here posting on the blog during that time and sharing what I am making.

New blog

After some thought I decided to create a new blog for my gardening and aquarium posts and keep this one just to share my art and crafting endeavors. While all of these interests are part of who I am and I am fine to keep it all on one place, I would prefer to separate them into 2 blogs. This way it will be easier for me to keep track of progress in my various interests.

If you are interested in gardening both indoors and out or aquariums I hope that you will join me at Moss Pixie.

A snailgonfly is a mixture of several things I love, fairies, dragonflies and of course, snails. This one is green because it happens to be the favorite color of the person it is going to.

My new camera case Handmade by me

Earlier this year I bought a new camera and wanted a new case for it. I could not find anything I just had to have so I started browsing the Vintage aisles of etsy. I normally do not alter my vintage finds. However, while browsing I found this new, still in the original box 1960's reel case. For film reels. I was born in the 60's so it felt like it was meant to be.

I thought how perfect! Film, camera.... get it? I loved the idea and set out to find a pretty fabric with perhaps flowers or dragonflies (I collect all things dragonfly). While browsing I found cotton fabric printed with rolls of camera film. Again, perfect!! I bought both months ago but never took the time to make my camera case until today.

All padded and lined with the cool fabric. I love it! Not sure if you can tell in this photo but there is a compartment for extra batteries, accessories, and a pocket for extra SD cards. Someday soon I am going to make a matching camera strap cover then it will be complete. I think I might have time to get to it in December.

100th snail giveaway!

I am now working on snail #108. As promised I am giving away the 100th snail and here she is.

Vadoma the fortune teller snail
Vadoma the fortune teller snail

The base is from a limb I saved from a Cherry tree that was stuck by lightning in my mom's yard 5 years ago. One other snail has this same base. I have covered the bottom with felt dots to prevent it from scratching any furniture it is placed on.
The snail and mushroom cap holding the gazing ball were hand sculpted by me. The beautiful rug and the tarot cards were made by GreenGypsies. Click her name to visit her etsy shop. It is full of amazing things!

You could win Vadoma.

To enter just reply to this post. You do not have to have a blogger account to reply but you must use a username. Anonymous replies with no username will not qualify to enter.

For extra entries... Let me know if you follow this blog. Promote this giveaway on a networking site like your blog, twitter, facebook (in a public post), G+, plurk, etc. Just leave the link to the post so I will know. Each one will count as another entry.
You can also check out my shop and give a link to your favorite piece, currently listed or sold for an extra entry.

I will ship it anywhere. Just know that if you are outside the U.S. you may be required to pay Customs fees on a $40 value.

Drawing will be held on Sunday, October 28th at 4pm Central Time. Winner will be announced right here on my blog.

Romain the racer

Ever know one of those guys who is always souping up his shell to make it go faster? Romain is one of those guys. When he is not on the road pushing past speed limits he can be found pulled up underneath a mushroom cap in his yard working on the engine.

You have to be careful what you choose to store polymer clay in. Uncured polymer clay can react with certain plastics. I have 12 of these tackle boxes that I have used for about 7 years now with no problems. I have them all sorted by colors and shades of a color. When you buy similar boxes you will find them much more affordable in the sporting goods (fishing) department than you will in a craft section.

Today is a milestone

Today I am sculpting my 100th snail. It is the one I will give away right here on my blog later this month.
Here are just a few of the snails that I have made over the past year. The ideas seem to be endless and I have a long list of more to make.

Triton fell in love with a fairy snail and moved with her into the forest. To keep him from getting homesick she made him a lighthouse.

Work in progress

This will be a Snailgonfly. Yesterday I made 4 inch dragonfly wings for her but decided to remake them. I am trying out different wing techniques. Some of you will know how it is..... you do something and see how you would do it differently in the process. That is what happened. So until I make new ones she will remain a work in progress.

The 100th snail will be completed soon. I decided to start the celebration giveaway on my birthday. Wednesday, October 24th and let it run until Sunday the 28th. Stay tuned for details.

Dirt Tank still going

I have not posted an aquarium update since March. If you click the "aquarium" label on the post or in the side column of this blog you will see I originally set up this 29 gallon dirt tank as an experiment in November of last year.

March 2012

As you can see some of the plants did better than others. I think this is because some needed higher light. My plans are to replace the top of the tank with a glass one so I can add a 2nd T-5 strip light. I know that if I do that I will need to add more plants because I am starting to get algae now. I did order some Amano shrimp for this tank and another one today. They will take care of the algae. I had not added any foreground plants because I intended to put corydoras in this tank but have not had the time to get around to it. I do not have a local fish store, at least not one I will buy from, so I have to either make the time to drive down to Alabama or order some online. I used to raise and breed albino corydoras but I want to try a different cory.

evolution of technique and style

If you watch any artist or crafter over time you will see their work change and evolve. I hope that mine has changed for the better. I think we all wish for that when it comes to our work.

87 snails completed

This was the 87th snail that I have made since I began making them in August of last year.

Snail Law Enforcement

Monday I had to stop taking custom orders for them because they started coming in like crazy. I'm still not sure what happened. Got a lot of orders all at once totaling 17 snails. I am half way through that list now.
I am planning to have a giveaway once I reach 100 snails made. That will be happening very soon right here on my blog.

Arlen the snaelf

Arlen is a sweet and friendly little elf snail. The faux stone planter is permanently attached and contains a live air plant. I do not have any heat packs so he will only be available until it gets too cold to ship. He is available in my etsy shop.

It is hard to capture a photograph of a ninja. Even a ninja that is a snail. They are very fast and tend to stay out of sight.

Fiametta has had a little too much from the jug. I don't know if she has been to a costume party of just enjoying herself after a long shift. She tried to tell me but her words were slurring.

Roslin is a shy snail. He is trying to hide behind a tree trunk planter. The planter contains a live air plant.

He may be a snail and he may be shy but he sure was not slow. He was listed in my shop for less than 1 minute before he sold! He and his plant are now on their way to a new home.

Anneke the 75th snail

When I started making snails I had no idea there would be so many of them. An entire world has started to spring from one little idea. Anneke is the latest and she is the 75th snail in ColtPixy land. I am thinking that when I get to 100 we might just have to celebrate and have a giveaway.

Three days before my husband ended up in the hospital we went to Lynchburg, Tennessee to his favorite barbecue cafe. We had so much fun that day and the idea for Bubba came to me. I finally got around to making him this week. He is listed in my etsy shop.

The Bookworm

Always in search of information you will often find this little guy with his nose in a book. One of his favorite interests is archaeology. If you do not find him behind a table of books in a library he is possibly out with one of the Earthworm digging crews.
